The light fades and twilight falls over Valisthea.
For centuries people have flocked to the Mother Crystals to receive their blessings - the bounty of Aether that enables magic to be cast and is the basis of life in Valisthea. As the Aether threatens to dry up and the uninhabitable Dead Lands spread, the fight for the last rays of Crystal Light becomes increasingly desperate.
Yet in these times of approaching darkness, there are those who believe the legacy of the crystals has shaped the fate of mankind long enough.
Clive Rosfield - The firstborn son of the Grand Duke of Rosaria. Although everyone expected him to inherit the flames of the phoenix and awaken as its dominus, fate chose his younger brother Joshua to shoulder the burden instead. In search of his own role, Clive devoted himself to sword fighting. He proved his skill when, at just fifteen years old, he won the Ducal Tournament and was named First Shield of Rosaria. Now tasked with protecting the phoenix, he was blessed with the ability to control some of his fire. Unfortunately, Clive's promising career ends in tragedy at the hands of a mysterious dark esper, Ifrit, leading him down a dark and dangerous path of revenge.
Joshua Rosfield - The second son of the Grand Duke of Rosaria and Clive's brother who is five years younger. Joshua awoke soon after his birth as the Dominus of the Phoenix. Despite his noble upbringing, Joshua treats all of his father's subjects with warmth and affection - none more so than Clive, whom he deeply admires. Joshua often laments that it was he, the family's frail bookworm, who was granted dominion over the Firebird's flames, rather than his stronger, braver brother. While Clive likes to throw himself into any danger, Joshua squirms at the sight of a carrot on his plate. But his worries are overshadowed when he, too, is gripped by the tragic events that will change Clive's life forever.
Jill Warrick - When the Northern Territories fell, Jill became a child brought to Rosaria from their homeland and taken into care there to ensure peace between the two nations. The Grand Duke insisted that she was raised alongside his sons and now, at the age of twelve, she is part of the Rosfield household along with Clive and Joshua. Always kind, kind and humble, Jill has become a trusted confidant for the brothers.
Benedikta Harman - After the difficult years of her youth that left her cold and unmerciful, Benedikta Harman conquered through her Swordsmanship and cunning command the royal scouts of Waluth. As Dominus of Garuda, Lady of the Wind, she is sent on a quest to find the mysterious Second Esper of Fire. Along the way, she meets Clive, who is pursuing the same goal - a confrontation that will force her to face her past.
Dion Lesage - The Crown Prince of the Holy Empire of Sanbrèque and Commander of the Dragoons, of the noblest and most feared knightly order of his country. Dion is valued and revered by his people and his troops alike, not least for the many times he has turned the tide of war in favor of the Imperial Army. So it is not surprising that the heroic deeds of the prince and his espers Bahamut are often sung about by the local bards. But a hidden evil lurks within the Empire, and its growing shadows threaten to snuff out Bahamut's light.
Barnabas Tharmr - The king of Waluth reached the shores of Ashra once a stranger with no title and belongings, but through his skill with the blade, Barnabas managed to create his own kingdom there. The savage tribes that call the eastern continent initially opposed his rule, but Odins Dominus almost single-handedly crushed their rebellion and united them under his banner. Now he has troops on land and sea to rival any army in Valisthea. Despite this, the king still mostly rides into battle with them himself on his ghostly horse, watching with macabre fascination the chaos and the myriad enemies falling victim to his fabled black blade.
