Summoned to the Misty Mountains by Lord Gimli Lockbearer, players control a group of dwarves who are tasked with retrieving the lost loot from the dwarven homeland of Moria - also known as Khazad-dûm and Dwarrowdelf - in the depths below. Their search will require great courage as they must delve deep into the mines of Moria to recover the treasures. In the procedurally generated dwarven kingdom of Moria, every adventure is new and you can undertake each expedition alone or online with companions. Mine minerals to craft better equipment and resources, but be careful: mining is loud and can awaken dangers that lie deep beneath you: noise means Battle. Explore the secrets of three legendary mountains, mine valuable metals, mine to survive, and battle untold forces to uncover the secret of the shadow that lurks in the depths.

- Survive the Darkness: To survive in the treacherous mines of Moria, you must accumulate resources, hunt, gather food, and pay attention to things like sleep, temperature, and noise levels. Dynamic light systems offer you protection and help you penetrate deeper into the darkness. Fight against unspeakable evil forces, survive dramatic battles against hordes of monstrous orcs and uncover the secret of the menacing shadow in the depths of the mountain.
- Base Building: Find comfort from the darkness. Discover new places and make space to build architecture on a large scale. Build bases from scratch or use the existing environment. Beware of the evil forces that seek to destroy the dwarves' progress.

- Explore: Descend into the depths of the Mines of Moria. The procedurally generated environments are rich in resources and full of secrets and dangers, offering a unique experience every time.
- Co-op multiplayer: Experience the adventure alone or team up with your friends in cooperative online multiplayer mode with up to eight players.
- Craft Dwarven Tools, Weapons and More: Craft and loot legendary dwarven armor, tools, weapons and buildings. Rebuild old forges to strengthen, repair and enchant equipment. Upgrade and unlock new technologies and fantastic machines.
- Discover magical artifacts: Discover ancient magical items, including swords that glow to indicate the presence of orcs, maps of long-abandoned mithril veins, books with forgotten crafting blueprints, and amulets that grant strength or wisdom.
- Mine Ore and Jewels: Build mines to extract valuable resources such as iron, gold and quartz and fantastic materials such as mithril. In workshops and forges you can convert ore into ingots and improve your equipment. But be careful, because mining is loud and can awaken what lurks in the dark.
- Extensive Dwarf Creation: Become part of the Dwarven legend and create your own Dwarves with the custom character customization tool. You have a variety of options at your disposal to give your dwarf a very personal identity. Later in the game, you'll find and craft armor and weapons to further refine your unique style.
